Why choose Cornwall for a romantic getaway?
When it comes to romantic holidays, I think a lot of us automatically conjure up images of glamorous destinations overseas. But I don’t think there’s any need to go abroad if it’s a romantic break you’re after, since there are just so many amazing places to get away from it all in the UK. Cornwall is a particular favourite of mine, and I’m going to tell you why I think it’s ideal for couples.
Ease of travel
OK, admittedly ease of travel probably isn’t the most romantic thing I could have started with – but there is a reason behind it. You see, I think romantic holidays are best kept simple so you can relax and enjoy each other’s company and, in my opinion, that means complicated journeys should be avoided.
So, immediately that gives destinations in the UK an added appeal. Nestled in the south-west of England, Cornwall has excellent transport links and is particularly easy to reach if you’re happy to drive – though it might be worth investing in a Satnav to avoid map-based bickering!
Now, the UK isn’t exactly known for its sunshine, but there are some spots that are better off than others; Cornwall is one of these. This part of the country has some of the best weather in the UK, so much so that plants that usually cannot grow in England flourish here (you can see some of these at Abbey Gardens on Tresco Island). So, if you want the chance to enjoy a spot of good weather, Cornwall is probably your best bet!
On a similar note, Cornwall also has some of the country’s most spectacular beaches, which are popular for everything from sunbathing to surfing. You’ll find several Blue Flag stretches of sand here and, since these are pretty much guaranteed to be the best beaches in the area, I think it’s worth heading to one of these for a romantic stroll or picnic.
Porthminster Beach in St Ives was awarded a Blue Flag in 2012 and boasts beautiful golden sand. What’s really magical about coming here is that it has an almost tropical atmospherel that makes you feel like you’re in your own little slice of paradise. Great for swimming, it also has lovely views over Godrevy Lighthouse. If you can, pop into the wonderful Porthminster Beach Cafe, which has won awards for the calibre of its cuisine.
Beautiful places to explore
There are few things more romantic than going out and exploring new places together. Cornwall is home to some truly magical landscapes and gardens that are perfect for tranquil strolls, with the Trelissidi Gardens being one of them.
Perched on the water’s edge, these gardens have absolutely incredible views over the Fal Estuary. Plus, thanks to the fact that they are nestled in hundreds of acres of woodland and parkland, they are an unparalleled place for walking.
When it comes to striking a romantic note, I think the accommodation you choose is really important. I recommend that you avoid chain hotels and instead book a country cottage in Cornwall; this way, you can stay somewhere with real character and also have your own little home to unwind in. Charming cottages that sleep just two people are available, and these often ooze quirky charm. If you want to treat yourselves even further, book a cottage with some luxurious extras, such as a sea view.
