Weight Loss Wednesday Linky – Week 12 #WeightLossWednesday

by S1m
Weight Loss Wednesday Linky

This week’s Weight Loss Wednesday is all about running, sod the scales for a week… they aren’t going anywhere and to be honest, I am currently going through an awesome moment in my life and simply do not care what those dreaded numbers tell me. Check out Weight Loss Wednesday Week 11 or fast forward to Weight Loss Wednesday Week 13 for a progress update!

I know for one, that running has REALLY changed my body shape… finally my butt is changing and for the better, it is actually shrinking! Why did I not start running sooner?!

Super lovely comments on my previous running post really did make me sit back and think about where I currently am in training and how much further I have to go. Realising I hadn’t been running as far as I had expected was slightly disappointing and as such, I knew I needed to take action.

So what was the advice?

Quite simply… ‘just run’. Honestly, as simple as that!

Running #WeightLossWednesday

On Monday, I took a huge leap of faith when I visited the gym, forgot all about the C25K app, whacked on my headphones and simply ran… and do you know what? For the first time ever, I ran a whole 10 minutes straight… no walking in between… I ran the whole 10 minutes!

Now, for most this is quite a simple task… not for me though! I was always and still am in some respects, a short distance sprinter… distances were never my thing and this was a HUGE achievement for me… and my butt!

All with a little help from ‘Dire Straits- Sultans of Swing’, which at just over 10 minutes helped me get through. I plan to follow the same routine today and Friday for my 3x weekly gym visits and then step it up to running for 15 minutes next week. I may also add that the Liverpool vs Man Utd match highlights were on tv for me to watch too! 😉

Still my problem lies with finding my ideal speed though. In the 10 minutes, I ranged from 8.5k – 9k – 8.5k – 9.5k – 10k and back to 9k. The 10k was definitely me being a total div! Mentally my problem is that I do not want to finish last (in general), in particular the Race For Life 5k. After news of Netty being pulled from the Spen 20k after 1.5 miles as she wasn’t keeping up with the pack, it has me slightly worried but I know no matter whether you finish first, or last… taking part and having fun is what matters the most!

Now it seems that forging on with ‘simply running’ is the best course of action, but Sultans of Swing will only get me so far… I need some more lengthy tunes to keep me pumped and focused. So screw my weight this week, I’ve been eating ok and drinking plenty of water – along with 2 bottles of wine and surprisingly the scales this morning told me I am still the same weight… I will take that on the chin, must remember some maybe be muscle… I hope! 😉

How are you doing this week? What tunes do you listen to when running? If you do not listen to music, what keeps you focused for the duration of your run?

Liz Burton March 25, 2015 - 9:47 am

I used to run a lot of cross country at school but I haven’t done it in years. I think I’d prefer to run outdoors than on a treadmill – there’s much more to see!

S1m March 25, 2015 - 12:13 pm

Indoors isn’t so bad – people running at the side of me seems to spur me on and I tend to position myself in front of the TV – I hated cross country meh!

chantelle hazelden March 25, 2015 - 10:11 am

Sounds like you’ve got a brilliant attitude towards it all at the moment. Huge well done on the running achievement, the time and distance come with more practice, I wish I could get out running more x

S1m March 25, 2015 - 12:11 pm

Thank you so much Chantelle!! It’s going really well at the moment and I am totally getting into running and enjoying it. Definitely want to keep going and hopefully increase my time and distance soon! 🙂

Alice Hassall March 25, 2015 - 10:51 am

I wish I was as motivated as you are. I’m bloody awful. I need to get my ass in gear and do something about it.

S1m March 25, 2015 - 12:10 pm

When you are in the zone, nothing will stop you and I am definitely in a happy place at the moment so keeping it going!

Boo Roo and Tigger Too March 25, 2015 - 10:52 am

I really need to get my act together, I’ve just ordered a book from Amazon at a friend’s suggestion and I hope that this will be the kick up the bum that I need

S1m March 25, 2015 - 12:09 pm

Ohhh good luck chick! Let us know how you get on!! 🙂

Sarah Howe (@RunJumpScrap) March 25, 2015 - 11:05 am

A whole 10 mins is really good. It can be so hard running so keep at it and you will go longer! I miss running. Had to stop after knee surgery boooo x

S1m March 25, 2015 - 12:08 pm

It’s certainly an improvement from 5 minutes, want to keep increasing in increments of 5 minutes and see how I get on – hope you are getting on ok chick! x

Mammasaurus March 25, 2015 - 1:52 pm

Having a good running play list is key – getting just the right tempo is good. And I found avoid rave else you end up fighting an urge to throw shapes as you run!!!!

S1m March 25, 2015 - 3:35 pm

Ha ha ha I do tend to sing along to the music too – am hoping that all the gym noise around me drowns out my wails! I definitely have some tunes that keep me pumped and run faster!

Katy Hill March 25, 2015 - 3:13 pm

Fab post! And you’re so right with your “just run” attitude. You can get so hung up with how to do things that are SO natural. I lost my baby weight both times through running around Richmond Park. It was great for my body and soul! Good luck lady! Loving your trainers too! xx

S1m March 25, 2015 - 3:31 pm

Thank you so much Katy! Proper feeling the buzz for it at the moment and may have patted myself on the back when I came out of the gym! Definitely great for the body, my butt isn’t filling out my jeans anymore so clearly I need a new wardrobe too! 🙂 x

Natalie / UEM March 25, 2015 - 3:54 pm

Fab post, I’m not a runner at all, in fact exercise in general is not really my thing, but I have a friend who runs who says its the best therapy.

The scales really don’t matter in the grand scheme of things it’s about your body shape and how you feel inside, and it sounds like you are where you need to be. Woo for the butt too, I can but dream of firmness in my behind

Lisa Savage March 25, 2015 - 5:00 pm

Sometimes the best thing to do is just ‘it’; whatever it may be. Well done on 10 minutes! I couldn’t run for 10 seconds. And thanks for running such a great link up! #WeightlossWednesday

Jeni Wood March 25, 2015 - 5:15 pm

Well done on your running progress!! In no time you`ll be doing 5k in one go…I remember when I first started running on the treadmill and could hardly manage 5 minutes without slowing down to a walk, in 4 months I can now run 5k non-stop in about 40 minutes!!

With regards to music my husband and I have spotify and we create each others playlist so when I`m running I have no idea what is coming on next and often I break out in fits of laughter when random songs come on. The other day I had NKOTB with The Right Stuff….so funny and it helps break the monotony of running whilst looking at the same wall for 40 minutes xx

S1m March 25, 2015 - 5:23 pm

That is a lovely idea!! Certainly given me food for thought, having someone else create a playlist for me – I am surprised I managed to survive but will keep going and increase the time and see where I get. Thank you for your lovely comment! 🙂 xx

Michelle Twin Mum March 25, 2015 - 7:35 pm

Massive well done on that run, I have started running in Jan and am finding it so hard, I get so many aches and pains and yes I know I need to get gait tested and buy some trainers that work for my crazy supination! Mich x

S1m March 26, 2015 - 8:14 am

I too need to get my gait done – bang went my theory about running simply being a case of moving your legs slightly faster! Who knew running was so technical… thank you so much Michelle – push through the boundaries and you will get there. I still suffer slightly with my knee but not to the point I did at the start when it knocked me out for 3 weeks… trying a special gel for me knee at the moment so will keep you updated!x

Damian @ Dareandconquer March 25, 2015 - 9:02 pm

Hi sim. Have you ever tried lifting some weights in order to get in shape or you are exclusively a “running” type?
The facts is that weight training builds muscle which helps in boosting up the metabolism and eventually burning MORE fat than normal cardio exercises like running.
When doing cardio you lose a specific amount of calories because of increased heart rate.
When lifting you lose a specific amount of calories because of the exercises + calories burned because of the muscle that is being built.

S1m March 26, 2015 - 8:13 am

Ohhhhhh I do my weights too Damian – I love them! Running pumps me up before I hit the weights and then I can attack them with gusto – I am not satisfied until my arms are aching. Good advice though, appreciate that! 🙂 x

John March 26, 2015 - 2:08 am

Great form of losing weight. I wish I have more time to sweat too. Missing the old days.

S1m March 26, 2015 - 8:10 am

I kinda wish I didn’t sweat as much but apparently… with running, you do. 🙁 Something I will just have to put up with – am sure the air conditioning is broken in the gym!

Fernanda March 26, 2015 - 5:17 am

I’m happy for you that running has been giving you results! I cannot run.. at all! Keep up the great work! =) xoxo

S1m March 26, 2015 - 8:08 am

Thank you so much Fernanda, I always thought I wouldn’t be able to do it… but I have surprised even myself! Will definitely keep going!x

Hanniz March 26, 2015 - 11:05 am

When I was a kid, I used to be a sprinter and I loved badminton and table tennis. Now I’ve gotten lazy! My dad keeps telling me to work my heart so perhaps, I might try walking up and down the slope leading to my condominium soon!

S1m March 27, 2015 - 1:47 pm

I started off with walking last year and enjoyed a bit of hiking so that helped prepare my legs – I also go on the bike on rest days to keep my legs going – surprised at how much they have changed already – hope you can get back on it!x

Summer March 26, 2015 - 12:50 pm

I should do the opposite. Make myself fat since i’m too slim. I like your running shoes, it’s pretty. It seems that I really need to get back listening to tunes too… I need to focus.

S1m March 27, 2015 - 1:46 pm

I can give you a butt cheek if that will help?! 🙂 There is a wealth of information on the net for helping people gain weight. The trainers are awesome, so pretty and pink! 🙂 x

Cass@FrugalFamily March 26, 2015 - 6:55 pm

You’re doing amazing and it sounds like you’re really enjoying yourself too x x x

S1m March 27, 2015 - 1:44 pm

I am indeed, I only wish I had started on my running journey sooner! 🙂 Thanks Cass!xx

Nicol Wong (@yuk_lui) March 27, 2015 - 12:25 am

i use to be able to run 10 minutes straight but ive been really bad these days. need to get back on it!

S1m March 27, 2015 - 1:43 pm

I never have so it’s a miracle for me! Today 12 minutes with a power blast for the last minute! 🙂 Whoop!

Kylie March 27, 2015 - 6:08 am

It’s time for me to lose some weight as well.. Need to do some extra exercises..

S1m March 27, 2015 - 1:43 pm

Hoping the posts can inspire you in that case Kylie! You can do it! 🙂

franckxethee March 27, 2015 - 8:32 am

In my experience moderate consistent pace can beat a fast pace since it would be harder to sustain that pace. I’m sure you’ll eventually find the perfect pace for you.

S1m March 27, 2015 - 1:42 pm

I think I have found it today Franc!! Hopefully – 12 mins constant running seemed to be ok and sustainable – fingers crossed for it continuing!

eliz frank March 27, 2015 - 1:12 pm

I used to run in high school and college but got tired of it and stopped. I enjoy hiking and speed walking instead. Keep up the work and get those sneakers dirty. Ha!

S1m March 27, 2015 - 1:41 pm

Thank you so much Elizabeth… they are only used in the gym at the moment… still no GPS tracker 🙁
So they are still relatively clean, so pretty and pink!

I’ve started to run more now and am actually enjoying it – today 12 minutes didn’t feel half as long/bad as 10 minutes did on Monday! 🙂

Debbie March 27, 2015 - 2:04 pm

Hi Sim, I love running too and try to get out three or four times a week (although for some reason this winter, my dedication and motivation went out of the window somewhat and now I really want to believe that my knickers have shrunk in the wash!)

I remember doing my first 5k organised run and being terrified of getting in last. I know someone has to come in last and they work just as hard as the ones up front, but I just didn’t want to be that person

Sometimes I listen to music when I’m out and sometimes the sounds of the birds chirping is enough to keep me plodding along…And I’m not adverse to stopping to tighten my shoes for a minute or two.

One of my favorite running songs is Eminem – Lose Yourself. It’s got a nice running beat and goes on for about eight minutes. And who hasn’t run to the sound of Vangelis – Chariots of Fire?…Or is that just me?

If you run out and about I highly recommend getting a Garmin Forerunner (or something similar). At the moment I am using the Virtual Partner setting to encourage me to get my arse into gear.

Wishing you luck with your 5k and keep up the running and ‘just run’ and you’ll be fine.

S1m March 27, 2015 - 4:39 pm

Awww Debbie, thank you so much for your lovely comment!

You will get your motivation back, noticed you are in Greece… I can only imagine the scenery over there, that would certainly keep me going!

Absolutely and if it is me, I know I have worked my butt of to get there in the first place, so looking forward to it now!

I definitely need music to listen to and know what you mean about Lose Yourself – at 8 minutes that is ideal so will look into getting that… as for Chariots of Fire… erm I don’t have that but am thinking of also getting ‘Eye of the Tiger’ 😉

I am looking into GPS trackers, unfortunately my budget doesn’t allow – single parent etc and this month bills seem to have been thrown at me every day 🙁 damn life getting in the way of something I enjoy!

Thank you so much, the just run attitude worked again today and the time passed by so much quicker, without me even thinking about it. Have a feeling that is the best for me and just keep increasing the time spent running 🙂 xx

Papaleng Pagulong March 27, 2015 - 2:18 pm

Nice running shoes. for me listening to upbeat music is of big help to one’s running pace.

S1m March 27, 2015 - 4:35 pm

Thank you very much! Love them to bits! Absolutely, need something with a beat that keeps me going!

Aisha Kristine Chong March 27, 2015 - 4:28 pm

Speaking of run, I am off for a run tomorrow – those shoes are lovely!

S1m March 27, 2015 - 4:35 pm

Ohhhh wish I could run at the weekends but unfortunately no childcare so use the weekends as my rest days. My trainers rock – definitely eye catching!

selly March 27, 2015 - 4:29 pm

i prefer another sport than running. i.e badminton or swimming is the best. but sometimes I like to do running in my gym. wht do you think about swimming? im afraid that my arm will become bigger

S1m March 27, 2015 - 4:34 pm

I get bored too easily with swimming – plus I have a race to train for! I am quite happy for my arms to get bigger and specifically train on the weights for this – unless you do weight train your arms will only get stronger, not bigger x

Vanessa Ally March 27, 2015 - 4:38 pm

Having comfortable sports wear while running is truly important so that your feet relaxed and you have no tension, just the pleasant experience of releasing the stress when running. If you can lose weight in the meantime, that’s also wonderful!

S1m March 27, 2015 - 4:47 pm

It all seems to be coming together at the moment, except my knee but a couple of rest days over the weekend will hopefully clear that up! Absolutely – good running trainers are a necessity! 🙂

Elizabeth March 28, 2015 - 5:39 pm

Running is such a fantastic way to keep the weight off. I used to love it so much when I could do it (dang foot injury!). I’ve linked up what will probably be my last weight loss post as I’ve pretty much reached my goal – well, I’ve gone as far as I can and still talk about it. The rest of my fitness journey will be mine alone. Thank you for hosting such a super linky to share my story with!

S1m March 30, 2015 - 11:19 am

Oh chick, thank you so much for sharing your journey with us and well done on reaching your goal – I am off to have a read now but it will be bittersweet… I am immensely happy and proud of you but also sad that you will no longer be with us on this 🙁 Keep checking in though!xx

Elana Khong March 29, 2015 - 5:41 am

Running can be pretty bored but you can’t deny the important of cardio. Get a good shoes, running will be a breeze. :p

S1m March 30, 2015 - 11:17 am

Having my gait checked is definitely on my list of things to do – I am enjoying it though and even ran at an incline this morning… just for fun! 🙂

Morgan Prince March 30, 2015 - 1:23 pm

I ran for the first time in months on Wednesday. My go to album of the moment is Sugarland, Twice the Speed of Life – it is all at just the right tempo to keep me pounding the treadmill! And I agree with Elana too, the right running shoes make a HUGE difference. I wear Nike Free, they’re amazing. 🙂

S1m March 30, 2015 - 1:50 pm

Ohhh never heard of Sugarland, I will check them out. My music taste is quite eclectic, so it can range from Queen, to Drake, to Duran Duran! Hope you had a good run and enjoyed it! I ran earlier but am already willing it to be Wednesday to go running again!

Pam / Hey, Miss Adventures! March 30, 2015 - 2:43 pm

I tried jogging for a short while last year but I easily get bored since I do it alone, before I start work. The only exercise I ever get is during our once-a-month trekking/hiking excursions.

Anyway, that’s really amazing of you to start running without having to worry about the stats. I think it can get really hard when you keep pressuring yourself about that.

S1m March 31, 2015 - 2:38 pm

Absolutely! I was so worried about sticking to the plan that really I should have just been running without worrying about the numbers – back tomorrow and cannot wait! It can get a tad boring, I usually position myself in front of the sports news and football. Cannot wait to start running outside and enjoy all the scenery! 🙂

MAMTA BALANI March 30, 2015 - 4:19 pm

HI, sim u know I always plan to run for few minutes on trademill but all my plan flops due to some other important tasks. After reading your post, I m super boosted to run and loose some weight. Thanks for inspiring.

S1m March 31, 2015 - 2:36 pm

Awww I am so glad you are inspired! Love running as it means for the duration, I am totally in my own little world… everything else can wait!

Tess D April 1, 2015 - 9:27 am

Well done on the running achievement-keep it up x Used to love running before my current difficulties now only able to work on my upper body for my current fitness regime but fingers crossed will be able to start again in the not so distant future

S1m April 1, 2015 - 2:33 pm

Thank you Tess! Hope you can get back on it soon – the difference it has made to my body shape already is amazing – but I am a stickler for also working on my arms and shoulders… now need to start on the core 🙁

Hannah April 3, 2015 - 8:12 am

Love Sultans of Swing hehe Good choice! Well done lovely, what a great achievement and you sound like you are so determined, you’ll ace your 5k! Thanks for linking with #BloggingToJogging xx

S1m April 3, 2015 - 4:32 pm

Thank you so much chick – it is an awesome tune, cannot help but run with it! Anything afterwards is a bonus at the moment! xx

Terinah DoBa (@ChaiiChi1) April 15, 2015 - 2:23 am

I love running! Bad thing is, due to my really busy schedule, I don’t get to run that often.. 🙁 I need to organize my time more..

S1m April 15, 2015 - 2:46 pm

Absolutely! Even fitting in 20-30 minutes a couple of times a week. I find it relaxing, before realising my knee is aching 🙁
