The pushup is a tried and tested exercise that’s as old as time. Well maybe not quite, but it’s been around for a long while and there’s a good reason for that. Regardless of all the new workout fads and high tech equipment that’s come out, it’s hard to beat the good old fashioned pushup. You’re usually lifting about 60 percent of your body weight when you do a pushup and it works most of your muscles. However, it does focus mainly on the upper half of your body so you’ll still need to do some work on your legs at the same time.

The other great thing about pushups is that there are so many variations. There are simple ones like a wide grip or close grip that work your shoulders or your triceps more. Beyond that, you get into some more advanced stuff like one leg pushups and clap pushups.


Squats are a pretty unpopular exercise because they’re a killer on the legs. Nobody likes doing it but that pain just means they’re working. They focus on the legs a bit more so a combination of squats and pushups is a great way to get a full body workout. Most of the aches and pains from squats are in the legs but don’t let that fool you into thinking it doesn’t work anything else. They’re great for your core and you can build up your entire upper body if you do squats with a bit of added weight.

Martial arts can help you to improve your reflexes as well, which has wide reaching effects in all areas of life. For example, you’ll be a better driver, type faster, and even cook better. Keeping your reflexes sharp also helps to keep your brain younger for longer.


There’s a reason that swimmers are famous for their bodies. People often overlook swimming because it’s a fairly low impact sport that doesn’t feel as though it’s that strenuous when you do it. In reality, swimming is one of the best sports for an overall body workout. Keeping yourself straight is great core exercise and obviously, you’ll be constantly moving your arms and legs. The resistance of the water is a great substitute for weights and doesn’t put as much strain on your muscles as well. If you’re interested in getting big then swimming won’t do that for you, but if you want to focus on weight loss and muscle definition then it’s the right exercise for you.
