Travel Tips For Planning A Holiday In Sicily

When you make a list of what you need for an ideal holiday – beautiful sunshine, crystal clear seas, delicious food, friendly locals and endless history- there’s only one destination that can give you everything- Italy! Of course, the country offers something for everyone at any time of year with its world-famous cities such as Rome, Venice and Milan, and of course Lake Garda. But an increasingly popular Italian destination for the perfect holiday is its southern island, Sicily. Home to a huge mix of history, a live volcano, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and (some would argue) the best food in Italy, Sicily is the ideal spot to have the holiday of a lifetime.

Where to Go

Though only a small island compared to mainland Italy, Sicily has a huge array of choice on locations to stay and visit. If you are looking for a taste of authentic Italian life in a bustling city then Palermo is a must! Unique medieval streets and busy food markets locals and tourists alike can enjoy this fascinating spot. San Vito Lo Capo is the best post for those longing for a holiday by the sea. The coastline here has four blue flags- a reflection of the incredible sea, and it is also part of the “Zingaro Nature Reserve” meaning stunning nature at every turn.

Where to Stay

In terms of accommodation, there are many options depending on what you are looking for. But my personal recommendation would be to rent out a private space. For example, in Sicily there are many luxury villas available to rent: this type of accommodation provides you with all the home comforts and a little more room than your standard hotel. Whether you are a family with small kids looking for a large space for the little ones and your own kitchen to help cater for fussy eaters, or a couple on a romantic trip- you can find a great range of options to meet all of your needs.

Must-See Beaches

This list is seemingly endless as the beaches in Sicily are so wonderful they really have to be seen to be believed.  But here are some of Sicily’s top beaches (not including San Vito Lo Capo mentioned above) –

  • Cefalu – This beach boasts golden sand and the resort is full of wonderful Arab style architecture which harks back to Sicily’s varied history.
  • Mondello- White sands and shallow waters, this beach is popular with both families and water sports enthusiasts alike. A perfect stop-pff point for those visiting Palermo.
  • Syracuse- This beach is located in the south-east of the island and has both white sand and rocks with unbelievable turquoise lagoons which allow visiters to truly feel they have found paradise.

There are sights worth seeing at every turn in Sicily so this really depends on where you choose to stay. Those interested in history are especially spoilt on the Island whether they are visiting the Greek Temples in Agrigento, the ancient Amphitheatre in Toarmina, or the Roman mosaics near Piazza Armerina the fascinating past of Sicily is brought to life. There are also great towns for shopping and buying local produce, water parks for the kids and Mount Etna– a live volcano you can actually climb (if you’re brave enough!).
