Travel Light- If you Can

Travel photography is very exciting to say the least, but it is very easy for you to get carried away with what you should take with you. Sure, it would be great if you were able to take your entire kit abroad with you, but this isn’t always a possibility. You need to travel light, with a mini tripod, a stack of memory cards and a flash unit. Having a bag that is suited to travelling will also help you to distribute the weight and it will also protect your gear against heat and moisture. If you want to get the most out of your trip then consider booking some photography experiences.

Travel Photography Tips

Choose the Right Lenses where Possible

Travel will open up a huge range of genres for you as a photographer. If you want to get the best experience, then you need to make sure that you have a selection of lenses so that you won’t be hindered when you are out and on the go. If you aren’t sure what lenses you need to take, then try and take one that has a fast zoom. This could be an 18-200 or a 28-300.  Sometimes you may find that the focal point is way in the distance, but other times it might be right underneath your nose. If you have a variable focal length, then this will give you a nice range of options.

Shoot in the Right Mode

If you are able to shoot in JPEG or in RAW, then this will give you way more flexibility when you get back. You will have to make sure that you travel with a lot of memory cards though. If you want to help yourself then you need to try and get into the habit of downloading all of your images to a laptop or even to a photo storage device. You need to do this every night so that you can free up your cards for the next day. If you aren’t sure how many memory cards you should be taking, then take double what you think you’re going to need.

Take Notes

Each night, take the time to write down a couple of notes in your journal. This will help you to add a description of the place that you visited, and it will also add some more story to your photos.

Another thing that you need to do is try and scout some locations. If you do this then you can go and revisit the location at another date to try and capture some pictures in the best light. Little things like this can really help you to make the most out of your trip and you can also stop yourself from missing out on some great opportunities.
