How The Right Mattress Can Improve Your Overall Health

Finding the right mattress

When it comes to our mattresses it’s odd that we barely give them a thought. Why that’s odd is because we spend so much time on them. Sure, we look for them to be comfortable, but we rarely think of them beyond just whether we feel rested after a good night’s sleep.

There is a lot more to it than that, of course. In fact, the right mattress can improve our overall health. When you don’t have the right mattress for your needs, then it can impact your health in a lot of unexpected ways.

Keep in mind also, that even if you had bought the perfect mattress, they are only meant to last up to 8 years. If yours is older, then it is time to look into replacing it and you’ll need to reevaluate your needs when looking around.

In this article, I will go over several of the ways that your mattress can impact your health so you know what to look out for.

How The Right Mattress Can Improve Your Overall Health

How The Right Mattress Can Improve Your Overall Health

1 – Back pain

The most obvious sign that your mattress is affecting your health is when you wake up with a stiff or sore back. And over time this becomes a chronic back pain that can lead to other effects on your health.

It can even happen that your back pain is caused by other things like lifting a heavy object or working on your feet for long periods, that then is made worse by the wrong mattress.

Your mattress needs to give you support by letting your pressure points sink into the mattress, while providing a firmness to keep your spine straight at the same time. A mattress from the bed shop Beverley is a good example as both the mattress and the slats for support move to contour to your body.

2 – Allergies

Over the years, your mattress accumulates a lot of little nasties that you don’t even know are there. Mites, for instance, love the humid environment of your mattress and live and die there. Then your dead skin falls off and accumulates in the mattress.

Also, if your mattress doesn’t allow air to circulate, it can attract a host of bacteria and even fungi and allow them to accumulate, as well.

How the right mattress can help your health

This all adds up to a nightmare for allergy sufferers. Many times people with allergies are going to sleep on the very thing that is causing their allergies and spending up to 8 hours per day in misery.

Going for a latex mattress or certain types of memory foam will limit the growth of bacteria and mites and help keep your allergies at bay.

3 – Obesity

Gaining weight and lack of sleep go hand in hand. If you are struggling to keep the weight off then you may want to look at how your mattress has a hand in your weight gain.

Your body produces a hormone called leptin that helps you feel full, but a lack of sleep drops leptin levels. This means you overeat as your body doesn’t know when it’s full. Not only that but you are less likely to exercise and move around when you are tired from a lack of sleep.
