It is important to show your child that you care about their education and that you are proud of their achievements. By demonstrating a positive attitude towards learning and having an active interest in your child’s school life you can help to motivate your kids to learn.
How to Motivate Your Kids to Learn
Share your enthusiasm for learning
Demonstrate a love of learning as a family. Talk together about what you each learnt at work or school and discuss interesting news topics. You could even ask your child to play the teacher at home and explain to you what they have learnt at school. Repeating what they have learnt will help them to memorise certain facts.
Make learning fun
Teach your child that learning can happen anywhere, not just in the classroom. For example you can learn a lot by simply going out in your garden and observing wildlife and the weather. At weekends try to incorporate learning into your fun family activities. This could include visiting a museum or an art gallery.
Show encouragement by praising your child’s efforts. This will help to boost their confidence and keep them motivated to learn more. However, try not to put too much pressure on your child to choose certain subjects or reach certain grades. This can negatively affect their performance and can cause stress. Allow your child to develop at their own pace and focus on what they are learning, not how they are performing.
Being disorganised can lead to feelings of stress and frustration. These feelings will stop your child from learning efficiently. Help your child to feel more organised by creating a study area for them. If they have exams coming up you could also make a study schedule. This will develop your child’s organisation and time management skills and help to motivate your child to learn.
