What are the Benefits of Extra-Curricular Activities for Children?

In a world that is overcome with technology, parents are often seeking ways to encourage their children to put their smartphones down and get out in the real world. Extra-curricular activities are a great way to achieve this and they offer children the opportunity to learn a range of key skills that they can transfer throughout their personal and academic lives. An independent school in Essex explores further below.

What are the Benefits of Extra-Curricular Activities for Children?

Encouraging children to explore their interests from a young age will benefit them as they get older. When applying to universities, students are asked to write a personal statement, in which they aim to convince their potential tutors that they’d be an asset to the establishment. They won’t be able to do this unless they can demonstrate their extra-curricular interests and accomplishments. This could be anything from being part of a football team, volunteering at a local charity shop, or learning to play the piano, and each type of activity will provide a different range of transferable skills.

Benefits of after school clubs

Being part of a sports team is great for teaching children to support their peers, even if that involves setting aside any differences to achieve a common goal. This is a fantastic skill that even many adults struggle to grasp but will serve them well both in school and when they eventually get a job. Through sports, a child can learn how to both win and lose in a graceful way.

Learning an instrument will allow your child to understand the importance of determination. Even if they are struggling to overcome an obstacle in their learning, they must practise anyway until they eventually get it. This is another crucial skill; to never give up! What’s more, being able to successfully perform a piece of music in front of others, and the praise that accompanies this, will give your child a much-needed self-esteem boost.

Many extra-curricular clubs will provide your child with an opportunity to make life-long friends with people who share their interests. Having a strong social circle will give your child the confidence to stand up to bullies, take risks and try new things, because they know that they will always have a support system behind them.
