The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools

Education

The success of the pastoral care department within a school will ascertain the general approach and atmosphere amongst the pupils. Pastoral care refers to the commitment the school staff have to helping each and every child develop on an emotional and spiritual level, while showing a genuine interest in their growth and wellbeing. I have teamed up with a prep school in Hampshire to explore the importance of pastoral care in further detail.

The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools

There are many parallels to parenting and pastoral care. Both involve keeping children safe, ensuring they are happy and helping them perform well academically, by dealing with any friendship problems, struggles with grades or any other issues that may arise. However, pastoral care is far more complex because it requires staff to look after a whole school, not just a few children. As a result, there have to be strict policies and procedures in place to ensure all members of staff are on the same page when it comes to resolving issues.

Successful pastoral care helps each child within a school connect with one another, and with their teachers, so that they feel a sense of belonging within the community. While being part of a team, their individual needs are also met. Your child’s form tutor will be their primary pastoral carer, as they interact with their form group at least once a day. Consequently, they are able to monitor each child’s progress and act as a link between their school and home life. If any issues arise at home, it would be wise to inform your child’s form tutor so that they can keep an eye on them for you.

At the end of the day, the real indication of excellent pastoral care is that all students will leave the school at the end of their journey with the ability to care for themselves and for others, make wise choices and contribute to their community in a advantageous and supportive manner.
