Slow October: 15 Cosy Ways to Enjoy the Month

A Slow October is about enjoying autumn without cramming every weekend, evening and spare hour with plans. Choose a few simple things you genuinely enjoy, leave some breathing room in the calendar and let everyday life feel a little calmer rather than turning October into another productivity challenge.

Think cosy evenings, local walks, easy meals, quieter weekends and small seasonal rituals.

Quick answer: To have a slower October, protect some free time, spend a little time outdoors, make evenings cosier and choose a handful of autumn activities rather than trying to complete an enormous October bucket list.

If you are looking for things to do in October without spending a fortune or filling every weekend, these ideas are deliberately easy, flexible and realistic.

What Does Slow October Mean?

Slow October means enjoying the season at a more manageable pace while still getting on with normal work, school and family life.

It is not about abandoning the to-do list. It is about making sure the list contains some enjoyable things too.

NHS Every Mind Matters recommends balancing routine and necessary tasks with enjoyable activities, rather than allowing everything in the week to become something that simply has to be done.

That sounds considerably more appealing to me than seeing a 47-item October bucket list and immediately feeling behind.

Pick what sounds lovely. Ignore what does not.

1. Leave One Weekend Deliberately Empty

October has a habit of filling itself.

Before every weekend disappears, leave one without anything fixed in stone. No major jobs, compulsory outings or squeezing three plans into one Saturday simply because everyone happens to be free.

Having somewhere in the month to breathe is underrated.

2. Go For An Autumn Walk With No Real Purpose

You do not need a challenging hiking route or an entire day out.

Take a walk somewhere local and actually notice the trees, leaves and changing light. I often collect conkers and pinecones on family walks to bring a little of the season back home too.

There is good reason to make room for everyday nature. A 2026 Mental Health Foundation poll of 4,000 UK adults found that 30% spend time in nature to support their mental health, while the charity points to evidence linking nature with improved mood and lower stress and anxiety.

3. Put An Autumn Simmer Pot On

This is one of my favourite easy autumn switches.

A saucepan with apple, orange peel, cinnamon or a few spices can make the whole kitchen feel seasonal without another trip to the shops.

My autumn simmer pot recipes include Apple Pie, Fireside Orange and Vanilla Chai combinations if you want some inspiration.

Just remember to keep an eye on the pan and top the water up as it reduces.

4. Have One Screen-Free Evening

No dramatic digital detox required.

Put the phones down for one evening and read, play a game, cook, chat or sit with a brew doing absolutely nothing productive.

Radical, I know.

5. Make Something Warm And Easy For Dinner

Cosy food does not need twelve ingredients and three hours of preparation.

Soup and crusty bread, jacket potatoes, a traybake or something you can leave bubbling away all count.

The important bit is that dinner feels comforting without becoming another job.

6. Make Home Feel Cosier With What You Already Own

I know autumn has properly arrived when the evenings draw in, the heating starts clicking back on and the throws reappear.

I tend to rotate cushion covers, bring my crochet blankets back out and use warmer colours rather than redecorating everything for a season.

There are plenty more low-cost ideas in my guide to bringing the autumn aesthetic into your home.

7. Read Something Just Because You Want To

Not something educational. Not something you think you should be reading.

Pick a novel, magazine or old favourite and give yourself ten quiet minutes with it.

It counts.

8. Clear One Annoying Clutter Spot

Notice I said one.

The kitchen worktop. Hallway. Bedside table. That chair currently wearing half your wardrobe.

If the practical jobs are starting to pile up too, my Autumn Reset Checklist for Busy Parents covers home jobs, family admin, routines and Q4 planning.

Then stop.

We are doing Slow October, remember.

9. Take A Hot Drink Somewhere Outdoors

Fill a flask, grab a coat and go somewhere green.

It could be a proper day out or simply half an hour at your local park.

One of the nicest things about October is being properly wrapped up while the air around you definitely is not.

10. Have An Early Night

Sometimes the best October plan really is bed.

If your bedroom still feels firmly stuck in summer, my bedroom reset for autumn has simple ideas for warmer bedding, softer lighting and making the room feel cosier without a full makeover.

No guilt required.

11. Bake Something Easy

This does not need to become Bake Off.

Make something everybody already likes. Use a packet mix if you fancy.

Enjoy the smell, eat the result and resist creating seventeen additional jobs for yourself in the process.

12. Choose One Local Autumn Outing

A market, woodland walk, pumpkin patch, farm shop or local autumn event is plenty.

The important word here is one.

October does not become more successful because you manage to visit every pumpkin within a 30-mile radius.

13. Have A Proper Film Night

Choose the film before everybody sits down.

Otherwise half the evening will disappear while everyone scrolls through the streaming services saying, “I’m not bothered.”

Blankets, snacks, phones away.

Job done.

14. Take Photos Of Autumn As You Notice It

Not everything needs to be photographed for social media.

Capture the leaves changing, a ridiculous pile of conkers, your dog disappearing into foliage or a particularly good sunset.

The Mental Health Foundation suggests that meaningful connection with nature can be as simple as noticing the natural world around us rather than travelling somewhere spectacular.

15. Decide What You Are NOT Doing This October

Possibly the most useful idea on this list.

You do not need to visit six pumpkin patches, make elaborate crafts, bake artisan cinnamon buns, decorate every room, attend every Halloween event and somehow begin Christmas at the same time.

Choose the things you actually enjoy.

Leave the rest to Pinterest.

How Can You Enjoy October Without Falling Behind?

Keep the routines that genuinely make family life easier and drop the pressure to make every free moment productive.

A simple Sunday evening routine can help keep the necessary stuff under control, while these practical ideas for stopping overwhelm are useful when everything starts feeling equally urgent.

NHS Every Mind Matters recommends identifying the habits and activities that help you feel well and making them part of your regular routine, particularly during periods you know may become stressful.

That is really the point of Slow October.

Not doing nothing.

Doing enough, with a little room left to enjoy the month.

Let October Be Enough

October does not have to be productive, beautifully styled or packed with memorable experiences to be a good month.

Go outside while the weather behaves. Put a simmer pot on. Eat something warm. Bring the blankets out. Leave a weekend empty and enjoy an evening when nobody needs to be anywhere.

There will be plenty of time for the busy run-up to Christmas.

Autumn passes quickly enough on its own.

You really do not need to rush it.
