Are Perfume Dupes Worth It? How to Save Money on Perfume

Perfume dupes can be worth it if you love the style of an expensive fragrance but do not want to keep paying designer prices. A good dupe can give you a similar scent experience for considerably less, but the smell, strength and longevity will not always be identical to the original.

The best way to save money on perfume is to look beyond the name on the bottle. Compare fragrance concentration and price per 100ml, try before buying where possible and work out which scents you will genuinely wear.

Quick answer: Perfume dupes can be good value if you care more about the scent than owning the designer bottle. Compare the notes, concentration, bottle size and reviews before buying because a cheaper perfume is only a bargain if you actually enjoy wearing it.

What Is a Perfume Dupe?

A perfume dupe is a fragrance designed to give a similar scent experience to a more expensive or well-known perfume while being sold under its own name and branding.

You may also see them called:

  • dupe perfumes
  • fragrance dupes
  • inspired-by fragrances
  • designer perfume alternatives
  • smell-alike fragrances

A genuine dupe is not the same thing as a counterfeit product pretending to be the designer original. You are buying an alternative scent, not a fake designer bottle.

Designer Perfume vs Perfume Dupes

What to compare Designer perfume Perfume dupe
Price Usually more expensive Usually cheaper
Scent Original fragrance Similar or inspired scent
Longevity Varies by perfume Varies by perfume
Packaging Designer branding and bottle Its own branding
Best for Gifting, collecting or loving the original Everyday wear and saving money

Price alone does not tell you which perfume you will prefer.

In a Which? blind perfume test, more than 40 people compared luxury fragrances with cheaper alternatives without knowing which was which. One cheaper fragrance was actually preferred to the designer original.

That is a useful reminder that an expensive name does not automatically mean you will like the scent more.

Do Perfume Dupes Smell Exactly Like the Original?

Not always.

Some perfume dupes can smell remarkably similar while others share the same main notes or general character without being an exact match.

The first spray is only the opening of a perfume. As it dries down, different notes become more noticeable and that is often where differences between two fragrances appear.

Your own skin can affect how a perfume smells too.

So I would be wary of anyone promising that every dupe is an exact copy.

The better question is:

Do you like how it smells enough to wear it?

Do Perfume Dupes Last as Long?

Sometimes they do. Sometimes they do not.

Longevity depends on the individual fragrance, its concentration, ingredients and how it performs on your skin.

In the Which? test mentioned above, the cheaper fragrances generally became weaker sooner than their luxury counterparts, although that did not always determine which scent people preferred.

So a cheaper perfume is not automatically better value just because the bottle costs less.

If you need to reapply it constantly, the saving may not be quite as impressive as it first looked.

How to Choose a Good Perfume Dupe

Start with a fragrance you already know you like.

Then look at the main scent notes rather than concentrating purely on the designer name.

If you enjoy vanilla, amber, musk or woody scents, look for alternatives built around those notes. The same applies if you prefer floral, fruity, fresh or citrus perfumes.

Also check:

  • fragrance concentration
  • bottle size
  • customer reviews
  • comments about longevity
  • the retailer’s returns policy
  • the actual price per ml

If you already know which luxury scent profile you are looking for, browsing dupe fragrances can help you compare more affordable alternatives without immediately committing to another expensive designer bottle.

Do not buy purely because somebody on social media announces that a perfume smells “EXACTLY” like a £250 fragrance.

Your nose still gets the final vote.

How to Compare Perfume Prices Properly

Bottle prices can be misleading.

A 30ml perfume costing £35 may look cheaper than a 100ml bottle costing £75, but the larger bottle costs less per ml.

Compare the price per 100ml rather than judging by the headline price alone.

That does not automatically mean the biggest bottle is the best buy.

If it is your signature scent and you know you will finish 100ml, buying bigger may make sense. If you are trying something new or regularly switch fragrances, a smaller bottle could save more because there is less risk of half of it sitting unused.

The same principle applies to plenty of other purchases. My guide to saving money when shopping online covers price comparisons, discounts and avoiding bargains that are not really bargains at all.

Try Perfume Before Buying a Full Bottle

Blind-buying perfume is one of the easiest ways to waste money.

A fragrance can sound perfect from the description and still smell completely wrong once it is on your skin.

Where possible, try:

  • shop testers
  • perfume samples
  • discovery sets
  • travel sizes
  • smaller bottles

Wear it for a few hours before deciding.

A perfume can smell very different after two hours than it did in the first two minutes, so testing it properly gives you a much better idea of how it will actually wear.

How to Make the Perfume You Own Last Longer

Saving money on perfume is not only about finding your next bottle for less.

Look after the ones you already own.

The Perfume Society recommends keeping fragrance away from light and heat, which means a sunny dressing table or warm bathroom is not the best storage spot.

A drawer, cupboard or another cool area away from direct sunlight is a better choice.

And use the perfumes you already have.

There is little point keeping a beautiful bottle untouched for some imaginary special occasion while buying another five.

How to Save Money on Perfume

If you want to spend less on fragrance without giving it up altogether:

  1. Try perfume before committing to a full bottle.
  2. Compare the price per 100ml.
  3. Consider perfume dupes for expensive designer scents.
  4. Check fragrance concentration as well as bottle price.
  5. Buy bigger bottles only when you know you will use them.
  6. Ask yourself, “Would I still want this if it were not reduced?”
  7. Store the perfume you already own properly.

That last sale question is one I find useful with almost anything.

A 40% discount on something you did not actually want is still money spent.

When Does a Perfume Dupe Make Sense?

A perfume dupe makes most sense when you love the style of an expensive fragrance but care more about how it smells than the name on the bottle.

It does not need to be identical to be good value.

If you enjoy wearing it, it lasts well enough for your needs and costs considerably less than the fragrance that inspired it, it has done its job.

A perfume does not need a three-figure price tag to smell fantastic.
