Collaborative gifted. I have never tried a weighted blanket before, so had no idea what to expect when working on our SIMBA Weighted Blanket review.
Carry on reading to find out what we thought of the ORBIT blanket and find out about the many benefits of a weight blanket.
What is a weighted blanket and what does it do?
A weighted blanket is a blanket that’s designed to be heavier than normal blankets and help you to get a better night’s sleep. They are generally filled with materials like glass beads or plastic pellets to add the weight.
The idea is that this extra weight provides a sensation similar to a gentle, comforting hug, which is exactly what the SIMBA Orbit weighted blanket feels like.
People choose weighted blankets as they help to improve relaxation, reduce anxiety and promote better sleep, with many finding that weighted blankets are particularly helpful for feeling calmer and more secure.

What’s the SIMBA blanket like?
It is certainly heavier than all the blankets in my house put together, even the ones that I crocheted and I noticed this as soon as I lifted the box!
The charcoal grey cotton SIMBA blanket (RRP £169) contains thousands of glass nano-beads and a cushion layer, which allow the blanket to follow the contours of your body, without you feeling restricted in your movements. You don’t actually feel the beads, you are just aware of the weight of the blanket.
It does feel ‘a bit weird’. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I guess that’s the only way I can describe my first experience with the blanket. Though once the breathable cotton cover was placed over the actual blanket, it did feel a lot softer and more snuggly.
What’s in the box?
The blanket comes neatly folded and wrapped in a really sturdy blue box that can easily be reused if you choose not to store your blanket when not in use.
Inside the box is the blanket and a handy washable cover to ensure your blanket stays in pristine condition.
The helpful bright blue ties inside the cover (there are 6 in total) are seriously handy for keeping your blanket in place and can be tied through the loops on the actual weighted blanket.
How to choose the right blanket for you
The SIMBA blanket is available in single size and is 6.8kg – or 15lbs in weight, measuring 135x200cms.
Figuring out how heavy your weighted blanket should be is pretty simple. The general guideline for adults is to choose a blanket that’s about 10 percent of your body weight. Ideally, an adult’s weighted blanket should be somewhere between 12 to 20 pounds.
Is it OK to sleep with a weighted blanket at night?
Yes, you can definitely sleep with a weighted blanket at night. The blanket should allow for comfort and movement, making it easy to sleep with and not restrictive.
You can use it in place of your usual duvet, or use them both together, especially on cooler nights. I seriously wouldn’t recommend using both in the height of summer!
If you choose to use both, you can place the weighted blanket either on top of or under your duvet, depending on what feels most comfortable for you.

Can you wash a SIMBA weighted blanket?
The charcoal grey removeable cotton cover is totally machine washable, but not the weighted blanket itself. Don’t worry, the cover is super easy to put back on the blanket again once dry.
Can everyone use blankets that are weighted?
Sadly no, not everyone has the option of using a weighted blanket. If you suffer with asthma or sleep apnea, you really should not use one as the added weight pushing down on you could have health implications.
SIMBA state in their own guidelines that the following cannot use the blanket. “Children, the elderly, anyone suffering from breathing difficulties or circulatory issues (including diabetes). As a guide, we recommend you only use the Orbit if you can lift it above your head unassisted.”
Wrapping up – what do we think of the weighted blanket?
Weighted blankets aren’t for everyone and it really does come down to personal preference. I wasn’t sure what to make of it initially, though did enjoy snuggling under the blanket in front of the TV, especially for how quickly it warmed me up.
Liv on the other hand was straight in there, using it in place of her duvet for a restful night’s sleep. So she is already a huge fan!
For an even better night’s sleep, check out the benefits of a SIMBA mattress to complement the blanket!
