Keto Halloumi Fries Recipe

Updated September 2026

Keto halloumi fries are one of the easiest low-carb snacks you can make. My simple recipe uses just halloumi, coconut oil and seasoning, with no flour or breadcrumbs and they are ready in around 15 minutes.

I originally started making halloumi fries while following a low-carb lifestyle and they quickly became one of my favourite alternatives to regular fries. You can pan-fry them until golden and crispy or cook them in the air fryer using very little oil.

Are Halloumi Fries Keto Friendly?

Plain halloumi is naturally low in carbohydrates, which makes homemade halloumi fries a popular option for people following a keto or low-carb diet.

The important difference is how they are prepared. Halloumi itself does not need a flour or breadcrumb coating to become golden and crispy.

Ready-made halloumi fries sold in supermarkets or restaurants are often coated in flour, breadcrumbs or batter, which can significantly increase the carbohydrate content. If you are eating out, it is always worth checking how they are prepared.

This is one reason I prefer making my own. You know exactly what has gone into them and, honestly, they are ridiculously easy to make.

You can find more advice in my guide to eating out on Keto.

How Do You Make Keto Halloumi Fries in an Air Fryer

You can also make keto halloumi fries in an air fryer for crispy edges with very little oil.

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (if needed).
  2. Cut the halloumi into thick fries, roughly 1cm wide.
  3. Pat the halloumi dry with kitchen paper to remove excess moisture.
  4. Toss with around 1 teaspoon of oil and add your chosen seasoning.
  5. Place the fries in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  6. Cook for 6–8 minutes, turning or shaking halfway through, until golden around the edges.

Halloumi cooks quickly, so keep an eye on it during the final couple of minutes. It is best served immediately while the outside is crisp and the middle is still soft.

How To Make Keto Halloumi Fries

One of the best things about this keto halloumi fries recipe is how little preparation it needs.

For a 225g block of halloumi, I generally cut the cheese into around eight thick fries. Season them, heat a little coconut oil in a frying pan and cook until golden on each side.

There is no need to coat the halloumi in flour, breadcrumbs or batter. The cheese browns beautifully on its own.

Serve the fries straight away with your favourite low-carb dip. I particularly like them with sour cream, mayonnaise, peri-peri mayo.

Why Homemade Halloumi Fries Are Better For Keto

Shop-bought and restaurant halloumi fries can look like a keto-friendly choice, but many are coated with flour, breadcrumbs or batter before cooking.

That coating can add considerably more carbohydrates than plain halloumi.

Making your own means you can keep things incredibly simple: halloumi, a little oil and seasoning.

They work brilliantly as a quick snack, appetiser or side dish, and because the recipe takes around 15 minutes from start to finish, making them yourself really isn’t much more effort.

  • Knife

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 225 grams Halloumi
  • 1 pinch Seasoning Choose any – cajun, Peri Peri etc

Instructions

  • Cut the 225g block of halloumi into approximately eight thick fries.
  • Pat the halloumi dry with kitchen paper and add your chosen seasoning.
  • Heat the coconut oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat.
  • Add the halloumi fries and cook for several minutes, turning regularly until golden brown on all sides.
  • Transfer to a sheet of kitchen paper if required to remove excess oil.
  • Serve immediately with your favourite low-carb dip.

Notes

Halloumi is naturally salty, so taste before adding extra salt.
  • Patting the halloumi dry before cooking helps it brown more evenly.
  • Avoid overcrowding the frying pan so the fries can crisp around the edges.
  • Halloumi fries are best eaten immediately after cooking.
  • Nutritional values will vary depending on the brand of halloumi and seasoning used.

Air Fryer Option

To make these keto halloumi fries in an air fryer, preheat to 200°C, lightly coat the fries with around 1 teaspoon of oil and cook for 6–8 minutes, turning or shaking halfway through.

Halloumi Fries Serving Suggestions

Keto halloumi fries are great served on their own, but they also make an easy side dish when you want something more interesting than regular salad or vegetables.

Try serving them with:

  • homemade keto guacamole
  • mayonnaise or peri-peri mayonnaise
  • sour cream
  • a crisp green salad
  • grilled chicken or other protein
  • low-carb burgers

You can also cut halloumi into larger slabs rather than fries if you want to serve it inside a low-carb burger or alongside a main meal.

Halloumi can be baked in the oven too, although I find frying or air frying gives the best golden edges.

Tips For Crispy Halloumi Fries

There are a few simple tricks that make homemade halloumi fries even better:

Pat the halloumi dry. Removing excess moisture helps the outside brown more quickly.

Use a hot pan. Halloumi needs enough heat to create those lovely golden edges.

Do not overcrowd the pan. Cook in batches if necessary.

Turn rather than constantly move them. Let each side colour before flipping.

Serve immediately. Halloumi becomes firmer and chewier as it cools, so these are definitely best straight from the pan or air fryer.

Are halloumi fries keto friendly?

Homemade halloumi fries can be suitable for a keto or low-carb diet when made without flour, breadcrumbs or batter. Plain halloumi is naturally low in carbohydrates, although values vary between brands.

Do you need to coat halloumi fries?

No. Halloumi browns and crisps beautifully without a coating. This recipe uses only halloumi, coconut oil and seasoning.

Can you make halloumi fries in an air fryer?

Yes. Air fry at 200°C for around 6–8 minutes, turning or shaking halfway through.

You can, although they are best freshly cooked. Reheat them briefly in an air fryer or hot frying pan rather than a microwave to help restore some of the crispness.
